If you need more time after selling your home make sure and ask for it at the time of the contract. Rent back, the seller in the possession, the release of earnest money deposit.

These are all options but need to be negotiated properly and the paperwork done properly. Also, some loans may not allow rent backs over 30 days by the seller. Also, a seller in possession for 29 days or less is seen differently than a 30 day, month to month tenancy.
